I'm upgrading my PC and can't decide between the new high-end Intel 14900KS and AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPUs. The Intel has higher boost clocks at 6.3GHz, but the AMD has its 3D V-Cache which is supposed to really help with gaming performance.

I mostly use my PC for gaming at 1440p resolution, with some video editing on the side. My budget allows me to afford either of these CPUs along with a high-end GPU like the RTX 4090.

Which one would you recommend and why? I'm really torn between the two camps. Any insights from people who have tested these CPUs would be great!

For pure gaming, the 7950X3D is likely the better choice, especially at 1440p where you'll be more CPU bound. The 3D V-Cache gives it a nice fps boost in games over the standard 7950X. The Intel may edge it out in a couple titles, but AMD seems to have the overall gaming lead this generation.

I'd go with the 14900KS if you do a lot of video editing and other heavily multi-threaded productivity workloads. The higher clock speeds and more performant architecture will give Intel the advantage there. For just gaming though, the 7950X3D is probably the play.

I'm running the 7950X3D and it's an absolute monster for gaming. Frames are buttery smooth even in demanding titles. That said, there are some reports of the CPU getting quite toasty, so you'll want a beefy cooler. Intel may run a bit cooler. I'd look at some third-party benchmarks for the specific games you play at your target resolution and make your decision based on that. Both are incredible CPUs though, so you can't go too wrong either way.
