I recently acquired a Dell Latitude 7420 laptop for work, and I'm looking to enhance my productivity with a docking station. Has anyone had experience with docking stations compatible with this model? I'm particularly interested in recommendations for a station that supports dual 4K monitors, provides fast charging, and offers a variety of ports (USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet, etc.).

I use DELL WD22TB4 with 130W Power Delivery, works OK.

^ This. Also, having messed with these Latitude setups over the years, I've found that buying these things brand new is usually a total ripoff. In my experience, you can save a ton of cash if you look for reputable sellers on the used market. Not sure but I think some of the older Thunderbolt 3 docks might still play nice with the 7420, tho I've heard mixed things about whether they can actually push dual 4K at 60Hz without some flickering issues. A few things to watch out for:

  • look for high wattage power supplies or your laptop might drain while plugged in
  • make sure the dock has the right firmware updates
  • check the return policy just in case IIRC the 7420 is pretty picky with cables sometimes. I'm not totally certain which specific third-party brands are solid right now, but definitely shop around before dropping full price on a new unit. If you find something cheap, let us know how it handles those dual 4K screens.
