I'm looking to get a new laptop that I can use for AI development and deep learning projects. I'd like something powerful enough to handle training complex models with large datasets.

Some key requirements:

  • Powerful CPU and GPU (maybe NVIDIA RTX 3080?)
  • At least 32GB RAM, preferably upgradable
  • 1TB or more SSD storage
  • Decent cooling so it doesn't overheat under heavy loads
  • Fairly portable - under 5 lbs if possible

What laptops are you using for AI/DL work? Any models you'd recommend that provide the best combination of performance, portability and value? Appreciate any advice from those with experience in this area!

I think new laptops coming in late 2024 will coming with AI features.

Microsoft just announced a new lineup of AI-focused laptops called Copilot Plus PCs. These laptops will feature built-in AI hardware and support advanced AI capabilities across Windows 11, powered by neural processors and large amounts of RAM and SSD storage.

Some key specs and features of Copilot Plus PCs:

  • Available from all major Windows laptop makers like Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc.
  • Require minimum 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and an NPU (neural processing unit)
  • Run 40+ AI models in Windows 11 to enable features like:
    • "Recall" - uses AI to create a searchable memory of everything you've seen and done
    • Enhanced Copilot assistant with GPT-4 language model
  • Arm-based models with Qualcomm chips quoted at up to 15 hours battery life
  • Intel and AMD models also available but ship later

Microsoft claims the Arm-based Copilot Plus PCs will be 58% faster than a MacBook Air M3 while having all-day battery life. If the real-world performance lives up to the hype, these could be excellent productivity laptops with cutting-edge AI smarts built-in.

The combination of Arm chips for efficiency and dedicated AI hardware/software could make Copilot Plus PCs a compelling new category, assuming the technology delivers. I'm cautiously optimistic and excited to see how they perform for demanding AI workloads compared to regular laptops. The first models launch June 18th, so we should get hands-on impressions soon.

MacBook Pro with M3 Max or M3 Ultra chip is an excellent choice if you're okay with macOS. The neural engine in these chips is specifically designed for machine learning tasks and performs incredibly well. Plus, you get great battery life and build quality. Just make sure your AI frameworks and libraries are compatible with ARM architecture.

I've been using the Razer Blade 15 Advanced for my AI/ML work and it's been great.

The build quality is excellent and it's powerful enough to handle most deep learning tasks. The only downside is it can get a bit pricey, but you're getting top-tier performance in a sleek package.

With that budget, consider a laptop with the top-tier Nvidia RTX 4090 (16GB VRAM) or the more economical RTX 4080 (12GB VRAM). Both GPUs can handle local LLM/AI tasks effectively. Just note that these powerful laptops tend to have loud cooling fans during intensive processing.
