How can I safely update my PC's BIOS without bricking my motherboard?

I've been experiencing some stability issues with my desktop PC lately, and I noticed there's a newer BIOS version available for my motherboard. However, I've heard horror stories about failed BIOS updates leading to completely dead systems. I have an MSI B450 motherboard that's about 2 years old.

What's the safest way to perform a BIOS update? Should I use the Windows-based utility or USB flash method? Also, are there any crucial precautions I should take before starting the update process? I'm particularly concerned about power interruptions during the update.

Thanks in advance for any guidance on this nerve-wracking process!

I recommend using the USB flash method (also called M-FLASH on MSI boards) over the Windows utility. It's more reliable since it runs outside the OS where other software can't interfere. Here's a safe process:

  1. Download the BIOS file from MSI's official site only
  2. Format a basic USB drive to FAT32
  3. Copy the BIOS file to the USB drive
  4. Connect your PC to a UPS if possible, or at least a surge protector
  5. Disable any overclocking/XMP profiles temporarily
  6. Use M-FLASH through the BIOS menu to perform the update

The B450 boards have BIOS flashback protection against failed updates. Still, don't interrupt power during the process. Good luck!
