I recently acquired a RTX 4090 GPU, which necessitates an upgrade from my current 650W PSU. I'm now faced with a decision between two options: an 850W platinum-rated PSU or a 1000W gold-rated PSU. Given the power requirements of the RTX 4090 and the efficiency differences between platinum and gold-rated PSUs, I'm seeking advice on which option would be more suitable for my setup. From a technical standpoint, the RTX 4090 has a TDP of 450W, but it can spike much higher during intense workloads. When you factor in the rest of your system components and potential overclocking, an 850W PSU might be cutting it close. The 1000W gold-rated PSU would provide a more comfortable buffer. The efficiency difference between gold and platinum is typically only about 2-3%, which translates to a very small real-world difference in power consumption. In this case, the extra capacity of the 1000W unit outweighs the slight efficiency advantage of the platinum rating.
