I'm buying a new MacBook Pro with M3 Pro chip and 512GB storage. Currently use SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD for YouTube video editing, but wondering if there are better options.

Any experiences with other external SSDs for this use case? How do they compare to SanDisk Extreme in speed and performance for video editing?

For professional video editing on a MacBook Pro, these external SSDs offer optimal performance and reliability:

SanDisk Professional Pro-G40

  • Thunderbolt 3/USB-C compatibility
  • Up to 3000MB/s read, 2500MB/s write speeds
  • IP68 rated, 3-meter drop protection
  • 1TB: $299.99, 2TB: $449.99

Samsung Portable SSD T9

  • USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface
  • High-speed performance
  • Drop-proof design
  • AES 256-bit encryption

Crucial X10 Pro

  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface
  • Reliable performance
  • IP55 rated, 7.5-foot drop protection
  • Budget-friendly option

LaCie Rugged SSD Pro

  • Thunderbolt 3 interface
  • Professional-grade speeds
  • IP67 rated
  • Ideal for outdoor use

SanDisk Pro Blade System

  • Thunderbolt 3/USB-C interface
  • Modular design
  • Rugged construction
  • Premium pricing

For optimal video editing performance, prioritize Thunderbolt 3 drives, which offer the fastest speeds. Consider your budget, required capacity, and working conditions when making your selection.

I recently switched from the SanDisk Extreme to the Crucial X9. While it's not as rugged, it's incredibly compact and offers comparable speeds. For YouTube editing, I found the performance difference negligible. The price point is attractive too. If you're mostly working from home, it's a great option that won't break the bank.
