I recently purchased a Samsung 990 PRO SSD with a built-in heatsink, now I need to remove it. I've heard it can be tricky, and I don't want to damage the SSD. Has anyone successfully removed the heatsink from this specific model? What tools did you use? Are there any particular areas I should be careful with?

Removing the heatsink from a Samsung 990 Pro SSD can be tricky and may void your warranty. If you're sure you want to proceed, here's a general guide:

  1. Use a heat gun or hair dryer to warm up the heatsink. This helps soften the thermal adhesive.
  2. Carefully pry up one corner of the heatsink using a plastic spudger or guitar pick.
  3. Slowly work your way around the edges, gently lifting the heatsink.
  4. Once loose, carefully lift the heatsink off the SSD.

Be extremely careful not to damage the NAND chips or controller. If you encounter strong resistance, stop and reheat. Remember, this process carries risks and may damage your SSD.

You'll need a 5 pointed star 1.2 screwdriver tip to remove the 4 screws. Then, heat the SSD with a hair dryer or heat gun. This will help with the adhesives. Use a metal spatula or plastic prying tool to carefully pry up both sides. Be gentle and avoid damaging the SSD.
