Looking for advice on setting up a home NAS. I'm a beginner trying to create a centralized storage solution for my family's photos, videos, and documents. My budget is around $500, and I need about 4TB of storage. Main priorities are ease of use and reliable backups. I've looked at pre-built options like Synology and QNAP, but I'm also open to building my own using an old PC. What would you recommend for my first NAS setup? Any specific hardware suggestions or tips for someone just starting out? Thanks in advance!

I'll break this down into the simplest approach:

  1. Get an old PC or small form factor computer
  2. Install TrueNAS Core (free)
  3. Add 2+ hard drives
  4. Follow TrueNAS setup wizard
  5. Create a storage pool
  6. Set up file sharing (SMB for Windows, NFS for Linux)

Total cost: $200-400 if you buy used parts. Much cheaper than pre-built NAS solutions.
