Need help closing split screen on iPad Pro

I recently got a new iPad Pro and have been exploring its features. I accidentally enabled the split screen view and now I can't figure out how to get back to the normal single app view.

I have two apps open side-by-side taking up half the screen each. I've tried tapping and dragging the divider between them but that doesn't close either app. I've also looked through the settings but couldn't find any options there to disable split screen.

Can someone please walk me through the steps to close split screen view on an iPad Pro and return to viewing one app at a time? I'm on the latest iPadOS if that makes a difference.

Any help would be much appreciated! Let me know if you need any other details.

To exit split screen view and return to a single app on your iPad Pro, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the divider between the two apps in split view. It's the small vertical black bar separating the apps.

  2. Tap and hold the divider, then drag it all the way to the left or right edge of the screen, over the app you want to close.

  3. As you drag the divider, the app being closed will start to shrink and disappear. Keep dragging until it's no longer visible.

  4. Release your finger when done. The remaining app will expand to fill the full screen.

Alternatively, you can also quickly close one of the split view apps by dragging the divider to the left/right and then flicking it off the edge of the screen in one motion.

Some additional tips:

  • To re-enable split view, drag an app from the Dock to the left or right edge of the screen while another app is open.

  • You can also adjust the split view divider to make one app larger than the other, rather than a 50/50 split.

  • Split view only works in landscape orientation. If you rotate to portrait, it will revert to a single app view.

An easy way to exit split view is to tap and hold on the multitasking divider line between the two apps. While holding, drag the divider all the way to the edge of the screen in the direction of the app you want to keep open. The other app will slide off the side and close. Release your finger and the remaining app will fill the screen.
